Making Beeswax Candles

The 3rd/4th graders made beeswax candles today. We have studied about bees over the past month in our book, the Little House in the Big Woods (3rd) and in learning about insects in Science (3rd and 4th). I had tried to see if we could visit a bee farm, since that was unsuccessful, we did this instead. Many tried the "honey comb" and discovered its unique taste. Enjoy! But please place metal or glass under the candle before burning!! :)

Making Maple Candy

The 3rd and the 4th graders made maple candy today! In the story Little House in the Big Woods, Laura helps Ma make Maple Candy to enjoy on those cold winter nights.

The kids were very patient waiting for the candy to be ready!

Jesse holding the candy that was just poured into the candy cups!

The finished product! When the candy becomes stiff the kids will get to sample their creation!

Stewed Butternut Squash!

We made stewed butternut squash for snack. Here is how you can make it at home!

butternut squash (cut in 2 in squares)
sugar
1 stick of butter
cloves
cinnamon

heat in a saucepan for 30 min slowly stirring

Here is a picture that I took of Megan enjoying her snack!

Making Lanterns

The third graders started off making laterns. We will have to finish this project at home. Unfortunately, it requires some muscle! Please take a picture of the finished latern and I will post it here!

Cricket in Concert!

As the 4th graders are finishing up their book Cricket in Times Square, we made posters for a cricket concert! I will post their final posters soon!

Patchwork Quilting

The third graders are making their own patchwork quilts. We learned that back in the day people used old scraps of clothing to make quilts to keep them warm for the winter. I brought a few of mine from home to give them an idea of the many patterns that they can make for their own quilts.

Mushroom Lab

The 3rd graders are studying fungus and mold. They did a mushroom (spore) print. First, they pressed the mushrooms into the paper and covered it with a cup. Then, we waited a day and observed the mushroom. The mushroom made a print, called a spore print. I will post pictures of the results in the next post!

Crickets at School!

Denis brought some crickets for the 4th graders to showcase while we were reading Cricket in Times Square.

Week of Sept. 28- Oct. 2

The fourth graders have been learning about roots, stems, flowers, and stems --parts of the plant.

Did you know? That all living things depend on plants for food!

We did a taste lab today identifying all the parts of a plant.

stem-celery
root- carrot
fruit- apple and banana
leaves- lettuce

They had a blast!!

Also the progress of their plants has been remarkable!! Check out the plants that they have grown!
